Cloud Index is a visual research project that collects cloud imagery from fossil fuel combustion sites. Since 2020, Jonas Fischer has been photographing the skies above power plants, industrial facilities, and other greenhouse gas-emitting sites. Part of the project is a growing online database that not only presents the photographic images but also connects them to current data about the various sites.

Even beyond the end of fossil fuel production, the consequences of its use to
date will continue to shape humanity and our environment beyond the foreseeable future. While the clouds in the sky will have long since faded, the impact of emissions and the resulting damage will be far greater than we can imagine.

Cloud Index is a documentary observation at a moment in time when vast knowledge about climate change and its consequences has long been available, yet too few radical changes are being enacted. This visual contribution makes the supposedly invisible destruction visible, places it in the context of facts, and asks the audience to become involved.
