The title Sharing Laboratory: Exchange as Currency is borrowed from the term sharing economy, a catch-all for companies and communities that facilitate
the shared use of resources. While this notion is profit-driven and has been discredited by practices of corporations such as Airbnb and Uber, here the artists appropriate and recast its underlying model of sharing. For the duration of this exhibition, the collaborative laboratory for analog color photography becomes a site of collective production by artists and visitors alike—a factory of images that subverts basic capitalist principles.

On each of the six days of the exhibition, two artists will work together in the photo lab and jointly develop color photograms. The products of their work will be presented on the exhibition wall as soon as they emerge from the developing machine, and will also be displayed on a purpose-built website. Visitors to the exhibition and website are not only observers of this process but are also invited to enter into dialogue with the artists by exchanging a photograph on the wall with one they have brought with them. The artists, in turn, react to these brought-in images by using them, with the help of a photocopier, as material for new photograms in the form of negative transparencies. In this way, the difference between artist and viewer, producer and consumer, is leveled out. Analog photograms meet digital photographs; dying machines such as photocopiers and analog developing machines collaborate to produce new images.

Evening discussions provide the opportunity to learn more about the artists’ working methods and approaches.
