The power of photography in our society lies in its ability to make things visible. What we cannot see does not exist. Like the language we use, the photography we surround ourselves with every day has an influence on social norms and power relations. The currency of photography is the possibility to bring themes to the surface. Wigs & Gloves showcases performances of a diversity of genders.
Through drag, burlesque, queerlesque, vaudeville, cabaret, circus, bellydancing, and acrobatic performances, artists question and discuss gender norms. They create a queer space that allows for freedom beyond binary-thinking worlds. With humor, eroticism, irony, and tragedy, the performances are political and queer-feminist. In a loop of 16 mm film, elements that stand for power relations and feminist movements in our history are revealed. Nostalgia, pop culture, and fashion flow as quotations into the artists’ performances, thus constantly discussing questions of feminism. The Polaroid, as an ephemeral medium, makes this retro-nostalgia visual, and refers to the Carte de Visite, with which the first burlesque performers announced themselves in the mid-nineteenth century.
